Joy Within Studio is a place for kids to explore the movement of the body, express their stories, and regain inner trust to learn through their own exploration. Too often, we tell kids when to learn, what to learn, and how to learn it. Our goal is to offer exercises and tools that they can use to access their own creative process and inner knowing.
Joy Within Studio is also a place for adults to do the same. Through yoga, movement, creative writing and storytelling, we can remember what it is like to have freedom of voice and connection to the body. It is through that freedom and connection that we can continue to allow the true story of purpose to come into our lives.
More about our Yoga/Movement Philosophy
As yoga continues to become more widely known in our culture, ideally, it is becoming accessible to everyone. Our classes help you find your limits, strengthen relationships (with yourself or your family) and help you find balance in your own life. Yoga, at its very essence, helps us tap into the truth of who we are, and helps us to connect with our own story.
We teach traditional Hatha Yoga, Family Yoga, Partner Yoga and Restorative Yoga. Restorative and Gentle classes all include hands on energy work which helps students release more fully into the pose.
Although we teach traditional Hatha Yoga, we have experience and training in Continuum Movement, Feldenkrais, Contact/Improv and Modern Dance. Because our stories are held deep within the tissues of the body, movement can be an accessible, and often effortless way to release those stories into the world. Movement is the essence of who we are. We are kinetic beings who, in our best balanced days, love to be engaged in every moment. Our blood flows, our cells divide, always, we are moving. Movement can be the instigator of our stories, the production manager, the medium and the stage for our stories to be expressed.
Some of us are writers. Some of us are storytellers. Some of us are movers. Some of us exercise and move only because we know it is good for us. Everyone is at a different place in what they need and what they desire. Our hope is that you come to a recognition that both your body and your story has a place in your life, and that the connection is deeper and closer than you may recognize.
Our mission is to help support people as they explore their own stories. Through Somatic Education, Writing Groups, Story Circles, Story Recording and Private Coaching Sessions, we offer support throughout the lifespan. We begin by welcoming pregnant mothers into all of our yoga classes. When the baby arrives, we invite a deeper connection through music, movement and storytelling in Family Dance. We help parents connect within through Family Yoga, and encourage the strengthening of relationship. As children begin to explore their own storytelling, we offer a series of explorations in our “Push Back The Desks” project, which allows kids to move and explore with their bodies as well as their pencils and brains. As teenagers, we support them as they move deeper into the expression of their stories - helping them connect with their intuition in their writing. We also encourage them to see creative writing, something there is rarely time for in traditional school, as both a right and a rite, a way to connect within to calm the waters of the sometimes difficult transition to adulthood. And for adults, we offer support & encouragement through life transitions. Yoga can support through periods of stress in life, and certain poses can help with transitions like post partum and menopause. Storytelling and story gathering can honor and support the aging process, reflecting and remembering and recording stories can help us move through life more fluidly. We also offer support through illness and the end of life transition.
We are in the process of applying for fiscal sponsorship, which will allow us the opportunity to work toward non-profit status, enabling us to offer more programs to more people. Donations are welcome to help us increase our offerings. |
